Revillagigedo Archipelago Travel Guide

Called "Mexico's Galápagos," the Revillagigedo Islands sit roughly 240 miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas — remote, volcanic, and protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the largest marine reserves in North America. There's no tourist infrastructure on the islands themselves; this is liveaboard-only water, and it draws divers for exactly one reason: the animals.

Everyone starts in Cabo San Lucas or San José del Cabo, then boards a liveaboard for the roughly 24-hour crossing south. There's no day-trip version of this — it's a multi-day boat-based expedition by design, which is a large part of why the reserve has stayed this wild.

The liveaboard season runs roughly November through May, when conditions are calmest for the open-ocean crossing and the big pelagic encounters are most reliable.

December through May is the core season — humpback whales pass through, and the giant manta and hammerhead encounters that the archipelago is famous for are at their most consistent.

Food here is whatever the liveaboard galley serves between dives — the real food culture is back on the Baja mainland in Cabo, where Baja-Med cooking and fresh-caught fish tacos are the standard before or after the crossing.

Giant oceanic manta rays that approach and interact with divers rather than fleeing, schooling scalloped hammerheads moving through the blue in the dozens, silky and Galápagos sharks, migrating humpback whales, and pods of dolphins that will ride a boat's bow for the fun of it.

This is bucket-list, big-animal liveaboard diving — the kind of trip built entirely around encounters most divers only see once in a lifetime. Expect strong currents, blue water, and depths and conditions suited to advanced divers; the payoff is giant mantas circling directly overhead and hammerhead schools materializing out of open ocean.
