British Columbia's coast runs from Vancouver's glass towers to the Great Bear Rainforest's ancient cedar and the rare white "spirit bear" found almost nowhere else on Earth. It's temperate rainforest meeting the Pacific — fjords, islands, and some of the richest cold-water marine life anywhere.

Vancouver International (YVR) is the main gateway; ferries connect the mainland to Vancouver Island and the smaller coastal communities where most of the diving and wildlife viewing happens.

Summer (June–September) is the driest stretch and gives the best underwater visibility. Salmon runs from August through October pull bears, eagles and orcas to the rivers and coastline at the same time. Winter on the coast is wet and stormy — its own draw for storm-watching.

Late summer into early fall lines up clear diving conditions with the salmon run, when wildlife-watching odds are at their best across the whole food chain, from bears down to orcas.

Fresh Pacific salmon and Dungeness crab are the coastal staples, BC spot prawns have a short, prized season, and inland the Okanagan Valley produces some of Canada's best wine.

Resident and transient orca pods work the coastal waters year-round, grizzly and the rare white Kermode ("spirit") bear fish the Great Bear Rainforest's rivers during the salmon run, humpback whales pass through the same waters, and sea otters and bald eagles are a routine sight on the water.

BC's cold water is consistently rated among the best temperate diving on Earth for invertebrate life — giant Pacific octopus, wolf eels, and anemone gardens in colors that rival any tropical reef. Browning Pass and God's Pocket are the destination sites; Nanaimo's deliberately sunk naval wrecks (like the HMCS Saskatchewan) add an artificial-reef dimension.
