The Edges of Earth Expedition is a global journey focused on conscious exploration and travel. We venture to remote and diverse locations, highlighting positive stories of ocean conservation and restoration. Our mission is to bring to light the efforts made in conserving and restoring the planet, encouraging sustainable travel practices along the way. The Edges of Earth Expedition isn't merely about journeying to remote, scuba-centric destinations. It represents an exploration philosophy. For us, exploring the edges of earth is about being open-minded, staying curious and actively listening. It means seeking discoveries everywhere, delving into often overlooked spaces, and challenging the ordinary to reveal hidden worlds in and out of familiar landscapes. It's about showing real interest in others, giving as much as possible to the places and people that we work with and highlighting the positives while exploring and traveling consciously. It's all about genuine stoke! To us, exploration isn't about trying to capture the perfect shot, or about witnessing the most epic marine encounters on every dive. Our expedition is entirely centered around the incredible people who call these places home—telling stories of the unsung champions of ocean conservation and restoration. From the secluded islands of Vanuatu to the bustling city of Hong Kong, we're unearthing stories of ocean conservation, restoration and protection from the most special—and at times unexpected—places. We hope that our time in the field inspires you to explore, even if that means doing it in your own backyard!
Expeditions are exploratory journeys undertaken to discover and understand the natural world. They matter because they advance human knowledge, inspire conservation efforts and create opportunities for breakthroughs—in and out of the scientific realm. Our expedition embodies the spirit of discovery and contributes to a greater understanding of the planet's blue ecosystems, as well as human behavior and perception when it comes to the climate crisis. As members of The Explorers Club, we are actively involved in furthering our knowledge of the natural world on expedition.
Conscious exploration is about traveling sustainably, minimizing our environmental impact while maximizing cultural and ecological understanding. It involves being mindful of our actions and their effects on local communities and ecosystems, ensuring that exploration contributes positively to the places we visit.
The distinction between a traveler and a tourist is crucial in the context of conscious exploration. A tourist typically seeks a more passive experience, often sticking to popular destinations and surface-level interactions. In contrast, a traveler is someone who immerses themselves in the culture and environment they are visiting. They seek deeper understanding, meaningful connections and aim to contribute positively to the places they visit. As travelers, we advocate for conscious exploration, encouraging others to embrace this mindset for a more enriching and responsible approach to exploring the natural world.
Our expedition is predominantly people focused. We collaborate with partners to share their stories of positive progress and impact in ocean conservation. We're not investigative journalists but creative storytellers and content creators, committed to amplifying the voices of those on the frontlines. Our focus is on the human narratives that connect us to the sea, sharing authentic and engaging stories that go beyond just capturing a pixel perfect photo of marine life.
Our focus is on sharing positive progress stories about ocean conservation and restoration. In a world often overwhelmed with negative news, we aim to shine a light on the successes and advancements in ocean impact, uplifting narratives that inspire change, hope and more contribution from those wanting to know how they can get involved.
An "Edge of Earth" encompasses both a physical location and a mindset of exploration. On the physical side, these are places ranging from remote, lesser-known locales to well-known global epicenters, often unrecognized for their conservation efforts. These locations challenge conventional travel norms, encouraging open-mindedness and curiosity. As for the exploration mindset, "Edges of Earth" represents a way of engaging with the world. It means connecting authentically with local communities, learning from them, and highlighting the positive impacts of exploration and conscious travel. Whether in remote islands or bustling cities, the "Edges of Earth" mindset enables us to always be discovering, listening and learning and contributing—embodying a spirit of conscious exploration wherever we go.
The expedition is independently funded through our consulting business established in 2017. As an independent production company, we maintain our autonomy, ensuring that our mission and content remain authentic and true to our values.
Success will be measured through a comprehensive 'Conscious Exploration Insight Report' put out at the end of the two year voyage, focusing on human behaviors and perceptions, as well as our impact and contribution when it comes to ocean conservation. This report will encapsulate the learnings, impacts, and changes observed and influenced through our journey, informed by the experts we meet along the way. We are not ocean experts, but we work alongside a lot of them. We are people experts, hence why our findings and outcomes will be focused in this way. More information will be published on our insight reporting in the future.
In 2023, our focus is on the Eastern Hemisphere, exploring its rich and diverse ecosystems. 2024 will shift our attention to the Western Hemisphere, and in 2025, we will collaborate with major partners to explore some of the most remote locations on the planet. We do not release our upcoming locations in advance, and our blog is entirely retrospective. To keep up with our progress, subscribe to our LinkedIn Newsletter that regularly rolls out story updates and features.
The expedition is a two-year journey, encompassing a wide range of destinations and a variety of conservation-focused projects.
For every destination we consciously explore, we collaborate with a network of scientists, researchers, conservationists, community leaders, indigenous communities, nonprofit organizations, mission-driven businesses, and dive professionals. Each partner is committed to restoring and conserving the blue planet, bringing their unique expertise to our collective mission.
Besides our blog, we contribute to Oceanographic, Girls That Scuba, Dive SSI, Mares Scuba Diving Blog, Flash Pack, Forbes Business Council, and other publications, sharing our experiences and insights from the expedition with a focus on conscious exploration and travel.
Scuba diving is our pathway to intimate encounters with the natural world. It allows us to witness firsthand the marine environments we're striving to conserve and restore. Diving is more than a sport; it's a form of conscious travel and exploration, offering a unique perspective on the underwater world and its intricate ecosystems. It's our tool for connecting deeply with the ocean and understanding the vital importance of preserving its health and diversity.
